#FreeKaavan: Save the World’s loneliest elephant

UPDATE: Kaavan has been rescued! He has safely arrived at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary where he is now preparing for his new life! Like Kaavan, there are still animals at the Pakistan Zoo who need your support. Your donation can help give them a new life full of care and love.

Kaavan was brought to Pakistan as a one-year-old baby elephant as a gift from Sri Lanka.

He spent his life in an insufficient enclosure of the Islamabad ZOO. He suffered from a lack of veterinarian care and from an unbelievable lack of empathy. He was held in chains for years and was forced to perform in front of visitors.

In 2012 he lost his only partner - elephant Saheli. She died due to a leg infection caused by the chains. The heart-breaking image of Kaavan standing above the dead body of his partner shocked the world.

Since then, Kaavan became widely known as the "world's loneliest elephant", the only Asian elephant in the whole country.

Four years ago, Cher, the famous singer decided to launch a #SaveKaavan campaign. A petition was signed by 200,000 people and FOUR PAWS came to Islamabad to assess the health status of Kaavan and submitted a report regarding the conditions not only of the elephant but all the animals living in the notorious ZOO.

Today, after all the legal effort and breaking decision of the Islamabad High Court we can finally save the world's loneliest elephant and bring him to the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary where his new life can start.

We are committed to performing the heaviest rescue we ever did. Kaavan will be loaded in a custom-built crate onto a heavy-duty cargo plane.

The heavy load will require a plane, cranes, and staff of veterinarians. In Cambodia, a special enclosure has to be built to enable Kaavan to settle in and to get familiarised with the other elephants living there.

This mission is not only extremely difficult, its one of the most expensive rescue we ever executed.

Today, more than ever before we need your support to be able to cover all the costs. Any donation will help us to change Kaavan’s life. Thank you!

Without the support of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board, the Pakistani authorities and the local community, American businessman Eric S. Margolis as well as our partners from Free The Wild, and last but not least, supporters like you, this mission would have not been possible.
